Elena Chizhova is a native Petersburger, the author of five novels.
The St. Petersburg topic is the constant magnitude of its prose, which determines both psychology and the characters of the heroes. More precisely, the heroines, for Chizhova gives a clear preference to female characters, female destinies.
Her two novels – “Lavra” and “Criminal” – entered the short list of the Russian Bucher Award, the latter – “Women’s Time” – was awarded this prestigious of the awards.
The fate of the main character of the novel is a kind of ironic paraphrase on the subject of the folk film “Moscow does not believe in tears.” The quiet limiter Antonina seduces the St. Petersburg “dudes”, she gives birth to a daughter from him and soon dies, trusting the girl with three St. Petersburg old women “from the former”, neighbors in a communal apartment, Ariadne, Glykeria and Evdokia. About them, about the “that” life – fragile, departed, but surprisingly real and the story of the heroine, the artist, who grown up, is conducted by the story …
