Nabokov called the story “Wizard” “The first small pulsation of” Lolita “.” This story – the predecessor of the famous novel – was created by Nabokov in 1939 in Russian, but she saw the light much later. The author remembered her only 20 years later, when he analyzed the archive: “Now that the connection between me and the“ Lolita ”was torn, I re -read the“ wizard ”with much greater pleasure than what I experienced, recalling it as a developed material during the writing of Lolita. This is a wonderful example of Russian prose, accurate and transparent …” The story was not published. For the first time, readers were able to evaluate this work in 1986: the story was published in English translated by Dmitry Nabokov. Entering a very small number of newly open Nabokovana, the “wizard” is the most striking example of that striking original prose that came out of the pen of Nabokov -Sirin to his most mature – and the last years of the novelist writing in his native language.
