Under the arches of the Russian temple. Church wooden sculpture of the XVII-XIX centuries

The album “Under the arches of the Russian Temple” is a kind of encyclopedia of Russian church wooden sculpture of the XVII-XIX centuries. The focus is the image of Jesus Christ on the eve of the execution (“Christ in the dungeon”, or “Saved the midnight”). This motive, rarely found in church painting, has become one of the most common in Russian sacred plastic. The following are the images of the upcoming ones at the cross: the Mother of God and the holy wives following her, John the Theologian, Longin Sotnik, Warriors and others. Most of the illustrative series was not published earlier. A separate place in the composition of the album is occupied by the images of angels. The publication also presents photographs of the beginning of the 20th century, depicting the interiors of temples and cathedrals, including those not preserved. Of particular value are the projects of iconostases contained in the book, published for the first time.
