The Tale of Bygone Years is the earliest of the ancient Russian chronicles that have reached today. Traditionally, its authorship is attributed to Nestor, a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, who lived at the turn of the XI-XII centuries. The initial edition of the annals was lost, however, thanks to the works of scribes, the annals were preserved in several lists with minor deviations in the texts. The chronicler begins his story with biblical times in the introductory part and ends with 1117. The Tale of Bygone Years is the main source of the history of Ancient Rus’ and will be interesting to all the enthusiastic history to readers.
