This collection presents part of the most interesting works issued at the beginning of the 20th century by one metropolitan publishing house. The most popular was the Sherlock Holmes series (free continuation of A. Conan Doyle). In Russia, this anonymous series has become widespread among city bourgeois layers and students. The pedagogical authorities and parents did not approve of this hobby, however, the series found its secret reader among not only schoolchildren and inhabitants, but also the intelligentsia, staggered from the revolution. The testimony of V. Rozanov is curious: “Children, you are harmful to read Sherlock Holmes. And, having taken away the pack, I slowly read it myself. Now the“ Siverskaya -Petersburg ”fly like in a dream. But I sin and“ for the coming ”, sometimes until the fourth in the morning. Terrible stories” (Rozanov V. “Obra -in leaves”).
