The “teaching” of Vladimir Monomakh is one of the most significant literary monuments of the 12th century, written by the Grand Duke of Kyiv Vladimir Monomakh. This is the brightest example of ancient Russian eloquence, a kind of secular preaching of the ruler, which became the first secular writer of Rus’.
Monomakh began to write “teaching” in the era of destructive civil strife, so its meaning comes down to the need to unite Rus’. The prince gives advice to the younger generation about how to organize his life, what rules should be followed in certain situations that moral principles adhere to. Monomakh acts not only as the greatest politician, but also as an ordinary person who has his feelings and experiences about the fate of his native land.
The “teaching” of Vladimir Monomakh not only tells about the heroic pages of the history of princely Rus’, but in itself it is one of their largest phenomena of Russian culture.
