Kurt von Stemedin, born in the Swedish Pomerania, had a long life and a wonderful fate. He became a soldier already at the age of thirteen, when in the rank of Fenrik he participated in the battle of Stralzund. Then he served in France in the regiment of Royal Sue’Dois and, as a French volunteer, fought against the British during the North American liberation war, having become famous there with his exploits.
In France, Stemedink entered the close circle of Louis XVI and Mary-Antoinette, and Gustav III, with whom Stemedink met still a young man, made him his trusted person.
Returning to Sweden in 1787, General Stedink achieved great success during the Gustav III war against Russia. Being a Swedish ambassador to St. Petersburg for a long time, he enjoyed deep respect to both Catherine the Great and Alexander I. In 1812, Stemedink was promoted to Field Marshals and commanded the Swedish army in final battles against Napoleon.
