Oscar Wilde loved to shock the Victorian public – and prepared the fate of his most scandalous play “Salome”. The reason for the ban on the production was a biblical topic, but also an unconventional combination of religion with eroticism, and foreign language (written in French) worked against the play. In England, the ban lasted almost forty years.
The collection also included the novel “Portrait of Dorian Gray”, condemned as an immoral work, some critics demanded to ban the publication, and the author to subject the punishment.
