Russia in the First World War: Nikolai Golovin

The history of the First World War in the Patriotic and foreign literature is mainly represented by works that analyze mainly the military-political, strategic, operational-tactical and socio-economic components. The sociological and socio-psychological side of the problem associated with the study of war as a social phenomenon remained, as a rule, outside the field of view of researchers. Meanwhile, the essence of the reasons why Russia at the end of the First World War was neither in the camp of the winners or in the camp of the defeated, lies precisely in the field of analysis of its “manpower” – the mental state and social well -being of military personnel at the front and the civilian population in the rear.
This gap is largely replenished with the fundamental work belonging to the pen of the Russian military theorist Nikolai Nikolayevich Golovin (1875-1944).
