The first novel of the publicist Elena Zelinskaya is difficult to put in the genre framework: there are too few details for the family saga, the power of artistic images does not allow us to attribute “on the Babylonian rivers” to documentary prose, real people and events show us a one and a half century history of the country.
The measured, peaceful life of the heroes on the outskirts of the Russian Empire, vividly described at the beginning of the novel, should not mislead the reader – the rivers will take them to terrible whirlpools of the 20th century: bloody battles, repressions, reprisals, hunger – nothing will bypass the family of Magdeburgs and Savich. The author intentionally did not simplify the plot. Doroto, indicating chronological and geographical details, he distinguishes historical milestones, scenes of bloody battles, strikes, and city life. Dialogues transferred by the language of the authors of the White Guard memoirs are sharply interspersed in the novel with the bare historical certificate of the Encyclopedia style.
