The action of the novel takes place in the outback of Russia and covers the second half of the XX century. On this historical background, the life of two main characters – a rural priest and rural teacher is shown. Fate throws both boys into the camp area where they get acquainted and remain friends for life. After the XX Congress, both be released. One graduates from the capital’s pedagogical institute, the other – the Zagorsky Theological Academy. Church issues in the novel are paid to noticeable attention. Here is the attitude to the religion of the king-sequences, and the show of the lowest church link-the rural, and the portrait of Patriarch Alexy I (with whom the author was well acquainted), and complex relationships with the Russian foreign church, and various philosophical and theological trends, and the reading of the Bible.
The break of Russian society as a result of the collapse of the Communist Empire, of course, painfully hit the heroes of the novel. Perestroika events, the fall of Gorbachev and Yeltsin’s access, the assault on the White House, all kinds of backstage torus …
