Goethe and Freud: Fritz Wittels

Fritz Vitels (1880-1950) – American writer, psychoanalyst of Austrian descent, one of the first biographers of Sigmund Freud.
In this work, F. Wittels shows what influence on Z. Freud had the personality of Goethe and his composition “Nature”, about which Freud first heard in his student years at one of the popular lectures. Acquaintance with this text, according to Z. Freud himself, prompted him to engage in medicine, thereby determined his professional path.
From the point of view of Wittels, Goethe and Freud, it equally determined the course of the development of not only German culture and science, but also human thought as a whole. They lived at different times, but had a lot in common. Goethe was a “man of the world”, he always acted supranational. Moreover, thanks to his works, modern German was created, which is still the pride of the German nation. Freud gave all his organizations international status, giving scientists the opportunity to study psychoanalysis from around the world.
