This volume of the series is a documentary portrait of the most significant of the uncorgected rulers of Russia of the XVIII century. Potemkin stood at the head of the Russian administration, played an independent role in the formation of the country’s foreign policy, and commanded the Russian army. He was designed to realize the vast and largely utopian conquering plans of Catherine II, aimed at turning Russia into a world power.
Thanks to the unheard of scope of activity and the originality of the personality, the “magnificent Prince of Taurida” acquired legendary features in the eyes of contemporaries and descendants, became the hero of his own myth. This grandiose and mysterious Potemkin is clearly visible in the testimonies of his life and works left by contemporaries, including his relatives and associates, diplomats and crowned persons, admirers and enemies, famous and unknown people.
The book includes materials that are still not published in Russian.
