The book discusses the shifts of the focus of attention underlying the construction of linguistic values. It is shown that the distribution of the focus in the language as a whole follows the general laws of the visual and auditory perception of objects, but largely depends on the conventions of the “language game”. It is shown that defocusing acquires a special role – the ability to reduce the degree of excretion of certain properties of objects using linguistic means. The material of Russian and English describes the universal mechanisms of defocusing, which are manifested in lexical semantics, syntax and pragmatics. A variety of language phenomena are analyzed – from abstract names and indirect names to speech acts of evasion and narrative texts.
