“Ernest and Celestine.” Set of 5 books: Gabriel Vincent

The world fame of the Belgian artist Gabriel Vincent (1928-2000) was brought by a children’s series of books-shots about the adventures of a good-natured bear named Ernest and his “reception daughter”, the baby Celestine. Tender watercolor drawings of Vincent are so expressive that they almost do not require words. She manages to convey the slightest shades of emotions, childish resentment, jealousy, confusion, fear of loneliness, bitterness of loss and love in all its manifestations. Love, which is more than life.
Gabriel Vincenn books inspired the French writer Daniel Pennak to create his own “Roman about Ernest and Celestine”, which served as the basis for the cartoon “Ernest and Celestine: the adventures of the mouse and bear” (2012).
