Victor Hugo for the French is primarily a great national poet, a reformer of the verse. At the same time, he and the creator of a romantic drama, a magnificent prose writer, whose works still carry readers around the world. Hugo’s novels are marked by the wealth of creative imagination, their plots are usually complex, the denouements are spectacular, the feelings of the heroes are strong and tragic. Turning to national history, the author creates convincing paintings of the past and vivid, memorable characters. It is impossible to forget the proud gypsy of Esmeralda, the ugly ring of the Cathedral of Notre Dame Klasimodo, the brilliant and brutal -hearted handsome Phoebe, tormented by the jealousy of the priest Frolo, the heroes of the novel “Cathedral of the Parisian Mother of God” (1831). It is no coincidence that this plot today found its embodiment in the opera and ballet, in many film versions and, finally, gained a new life in the popular musical.
