The four novels of the 1930s and 1940s, which constitute the collection, rightfully part of the Golden Fund of Chinese literature and have not yet been translated into Russian. Their authors are Lao She, Sheng Tsungen, Zhang Aylin and Xui – the classics of Chinese literature of the twentieth century, who looked like marginals in the politicized literary arena of China in the 1930-1940s, but gained a wide recognition of the Chinese reader in the latest time.
The tragic fate of the Beijing policeman, the archaic customs of the Chinese hinterland, the novel of the Shanghai dandy with a werewolf girl, the soul of a Chinese woman who dreams of shaving a new family nest – such artistic canvases unfold on the pages of these stories. Writers violate the stencil boundaries of revolutionary literature, penetrate into the depths of the inner world of their characters, look for answers to eternal questions about happiness and meaning of life.
