For the first time in the science of art, an attempt to systematically analyze the problems of interpretation of sacred architecture is made. Within the framework of the general hermeneutics of architecture, an iconographic approach is distinguished and its main options represented by the names of J. Zauer (the symbolism of the house of God), E. Maly (architecture as a hieroglyph of the sacred), R. Krauthemer (actually iconography of architectural archetypes), A. Grabar (architecture as a system of semantic fields), are identified. F.-V. Daikhmann (symbolism of architecture as archaeological objectivity) and Signing-Larsen station (semantics of liturgical space). The undoubted restrictions of iconography are recognized, which forcing other methods of description and interpretation of the architectural -liturgical whole – the temple body, which is understood as a “body of the symbol”, as a form and means of theophany. In vast applications, including an overview of the domestic experience of architectural iconography is also presented.
