The story of the 5th Wehrmacht’s 5th Division was written by her veteran Adolf Raik – the former commander of the 5th artillery regiment, which was part of the division.
One of the oldest connections of the Wehrmacht was formed as the 5th Infantry Division in 1934 in the south-west of Germany, in the land of Badenvyurtsberg. Having triumphantly passing through the territory of France during the campaign of 1939-1940, it was transferred to the east and from the first until the last days participated in the war against the Soviet Union.
In 1941, advancing in the Moscow direction, the 5th Infantry Division reached the Vyazma district, and then fought on the approaches to Moscow. Having suffered heavy losses, at the end of 1941 it was aimed at reforming in calm France, not taking part in the final part of the battle near Moscow, which turned out to be fatal for many German formations.
