In 1853, the book “12 years of slavery” excelled American society, becoming a harbinger of the Civil War. After 160 years, she inspired Steve McCouin and Brad Pitt to create a movie masterpiece, who received many awards and confessions, including Oscar-2014 as the “Best Film of the Year”.
As for Solomon Northap himself, for him the book became a confession about the darkest period of his life. The period when despair almost strangled the hope of breaking out of slavery chains and regaining the freedom and dignity that was taken from him.
The text for translation and illustrations are borrowed from the original edition of 1855. The translator has preserved the author’s style, which demonstrates that Solomon Northap was not only an educated, but also a literary gifted person.
