The book of Simon Franklin, a university professor in Cambridge, contains a detailed review of the written culture of Ancient Rus’ and formulates an original concept regarding the emergence and functions of this culture.
Part I introduces the reader to various expressions of written culture, which differ in the schedule used in them and in the language, in the material taken for writing, by social and material environment – from the lens of builders on bricks up to luxurious manuscripts on parchment.
Part II proposes a series of thematically separate developments on the “socio-cultural dynamics” of letters that make it possible to understand and explain the distinctive features of the new technology, as it was learned in Rus’.
