Wives and daughters: Elizabeth Gaskell

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) is one of the most famous “literary ladies” of Victorian England, author of the novels “Krenford”, “North and South”, “Wife and daughter”. The latter remained unfinished due to the sudden death of Gaskell;
The final part of the novel was added by the journalist and writer F. Greenwood, based on the information received from the writer herself about the development of the plot and the denouement. By nature, the novel is close to the works of Charlotte Bronte, with which Gaskell was very friendly, and the subtle irony in the image of provincial snobbery and prejudice relates him with the tradition of Tekkestea and Dickens. The main character, the daughter of a local doctor, pure, trusting, ardent Molly Gibson, is experiencing a difficult stage of growing up when her heart first recognizes the torment of unrequited love. The novel “Wife and daughter”, the pinnacle of the literary work of the famous writer, is published in Russian for the first time.
