In this publication, N. G. Chernyshevsky’s novel “What to do?” – One of the most ambiguous works of Russian literature. The novel saw the light in 1863 and immediately caused a violent controversy: from sharply negative reviews of a conservative public to enthusiasm in the circle of left -wing youth. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, there was no student or even a gymnasium student who did not read “what to do?” In the Soviet era, Chernyshevsky took an honorable place on the literary Olympus, and his main work was included in the compulsory school curriculum. But today the appeal to the novel “What to do?” It makes you rethink its significance in the history of Russian literature and social life.
