Fantastic parables of the French prose writer and poet Julia Supervel (1884-1960). In Russia, it is not too widely known, but the French call it one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Supervel’s prose is surprisingly poetic. In each of the parables, he creates a special world that is similar and at the same time unlike our, in something even turned inside out, is a world in which its own, sometimes strange, laws act. And there are always those – loners, eccentrics, outcasts – for whom the existing order of things is not acceptable. The stories told by Supervel are full of sadness, but they are beautiful, and their beauty is sad, thoughtful, tender, slightly painful – fascinates.
