In the novel of the famous French writer Jean -Mari Gustav Leclazio (b. 1940), the Nobel laureate, the fate of two girls – Jewish Esther and Arabbes of Nedzhma are intertwined (both names mean “star”).
Having survived the horrors of World War II in France, Esther, along with his mother, leaves for the newly created state of Israel. There, in the camp of Palestinian refugees, Esther and Nedzhma manage to exchange names. The girls will no longer meet, but they will remember each other, both of them are hostages of the war.
And while people on earth will fight, says Leclazio, Esther and Nedzhma will remain wandering stars.
