Poet and prose writer Sergey Zhadan (b. 1974) – a prominent figure of modern Ukrainian cultural life. He organizes public actions, acts together with rock bands, translating German and Russian poets. He is called the face and voice of new Ukrainian literature.
The novel “Voroshilovgrad”, like all the texts of Zhadan, is full of poetic metaphors, unexpected turns of the plot, remember and dreams, and at the same time tells about the events of real and modern. The main character, Herman, goes to the Donbass, to the city of his childhood, surrounded by endless corn fields. His brother, the owner of the gas station, unexpectedly disappeared, and the local mafia “laid eyes” on the gas station itself. Unexpectedly for himself, Herman realizes that “selling everything and dumping” is not only wrong, but also impossible and must be defended by your business, your territory, your women, your own memory.
The novel was awarded the BBC Award “Book of the Year”.
