The novel of the English writer of the Enlightenment, prose writer, poet, playwright, publicist and historian Oliver Goldsmith “Vekfield Priest” since his first publication in 1766 gained popularity among the reader, and later was repeatedly reprinted and was translated into many languages. By the will of providence and human ill -wishes, the modest rural pastor Charles Primroza, leading a secluded patriarchal life in the circle of his family, falls to the share of a series of disasters – parting with children, loss of home shelter, ruin, and imprisonment. Like the biblical hyova, the main character transfers these hardships courageously and steadily – and in the unexpectedly prosperous ending of the book, “as grateful in happiness as he was humble in trouble.” In the first-person life history of Primrosis for the pathetic intonation of the Hero-Exchange Hero, we distinguish between the soft, good-natured author’s humor, which is painted by many plot situations of the novel.
