Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov was born in St. Petersburg, in the educated noble family. Polenov’s great -grandfather on the maternal side was the famous Russian architect Nikolai Alexandrovich Lvov. Mother Vasily Dmitrievich, Maria Alekseevna Voeyova painted perfectly. Dmitry Vasilievich Polenov – the artist’s father was an archaeologist and bibliographer, a passionate fan of K.P. Bryullov. Since childhood, Vasily Dmitrievich was fond of drawing. This hobby was shared with him by sister Elena Dmitrievna, in the future one of the founders of the Russian modern.
Polenov was a wonderful colorist, but his works are loved by all, not only for color expressiveness, but also for the feeling of the beautiful that the artist put in each of his canvas. His works such as the “Moscow courtyard”, “Grandmother’s Garden”, “The overgrown pond” became the genuine classic of Russian art. A significant place in the artist’s legacy is occupied by a cycle of paintings on gospel themes, this cycle is a significant phenomenon of Russian art culture.
