Book V.Ya. Lakshina (the first edition was published in 1963, the second – in 1975) reveals the personal relations and creative ties of Leo Tolstoy and Chekhov, two geniuses of Russian realism. Their names are marked by a whole era in Russian literature. According to documentary evidence, memoirs, diaries, letters of contemporaries, the history of creative meetings, conversations, and the disputes of Tolstoy and Chekhov in Moscow, Yasnaya Polyana and Gaspra were widely and fully restored.
The author presented the literary portraits of great artists in all the variety of their characters, searches, achievements. A comparative analysis revealed the features of the artistic worlds of Tolstoy and Chekhov, which slipped away in ordinary studies.
