The book contains a consistent presentation of the theory of density matrices, which are used in quantum mechanics for statistical description of both equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. A variational method is proposed, which makes it possible to obtain equations for the density matrix describing the equilibrium state of such a system from the principle of the minimum of the free energy of the multi -composite system. With the help of this method, microscopic theories of such cooperative phenomena as ferromagnetism, superconductivity and ultracus are built. The theory is developed for nonequilibrium density matrices. The equation was obtained for the quantum harmonic oscillator interacting with the thermostat.
