In 1954, when the novel “The Last Temptation” was published, its author Nikos Kazandzakis was already at the zenith of fame. The romance of Kazandzakis brought the novels “Alexis Zorba”, “Christ’s again”, “Captain Mikalis”, but a special place in his work is “The Last Temptation” – a kind of outcome of the writer’s religious and philosophical searches. In this novel, Kazanzakis, who experienced in his youth, the influence of Nietzsche and Bergson, who survived the passion for Buddhism and inspired by the ideas of early ascetic Christianity, gave his own, different from the canonical, the interpretation of the image of Christ. A negatively met by the Roman Catholic Church, the novel was immediately included in the list of prohibited books. 30 years later, Kazanzakis and his novel were started again in connection with the release of Martin Scorsese “The Last Temptation of Christ”.
