In the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich, the Antioch Patriarch Makarii came to Russia twice: for the first time (1656) to collect donations, and the second, ten years later, for the trial of Patriarch Nikon. On the first visit with him was his own son, the Archdeacon Pavel Aleppo, who compiled a detailed and extremely interesting description of his father’s three -year journey. In fullness and diversity of content, the description of Pavel Aleppski is one of the best and most valuable written monuments about Russia in the middle of the 17th century and in many respects surpasses the notes about it of the then Western European travelers. The translation from the Arab manuscript of the Moscow Main Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was performed by prof. G.A. Murkos (1846-1911). The basis of this publication took five issues of this work that went out of the press in 1896-1900. In modern spelling, the book was first published in 2005.
