The book describes physical phenomena that arise on the border liquid crystals (LCD) – a solid body, induced structures of the surface layers, components of the energy of the adhesion of the LCD molecules with a substrate, the nature of the orientation of the LCD molecules on the surface, the conditions of wetting. It is shown that the influence of the substrate can significantly change the physical properties of the LCD at the border with the surface.
The tasks of advanced technologies aimed at ensuring the controlled and reproduced orientation and the energy of the adhesion of the LCD molecules with the substrate are affected. Theoretically described local deformations of the LCD in heterogeneous external fields and are given the results of the experimental detection of various kinds of surface heterogeneities in materials that are not observed in some cases alternative methods in material science, microelectronics and medicine.
The book is intended for students, graduate students and researchers working in the field of LCD physics, surface physics, non -destructive control methods and materials science.
