The first Russian king Ivan IV Vasilievich ascended the throne at a difficult time for the country. From the south of Russia, the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Empire threatened, from the west – Poland, and Lithuania, Sweden and the Livonian Order. From the east, Kazan raids raid on Russian land. The king managed to cope with the challenge of hostile states. In 1552, Kazan was stormed, two years later the Astrakhan kingdom became part of the Russian state.
