The textbook proposes a consistent consideration of the main issues of verbal semantics on the material of modern English. The functional and semiotic interpretation of the sign nature of the word, the essence of the meaning in the English word is represented. In the chapters devoted to the definition of the word and the structure of verbal meaning, including polysemia, motivated by homonym and morphology of the word, a fundamentally new look at the nature of the meaning and way of its existence in the word is substantiated. In the chapters on phraseology, antonymy and synonymy, the text nature of these phenomena is justified and a number of new approaches to their definition are proposed. Each chapter pays attention to the critical consideration of the corresponding sections of the denotative theory of meaning. The textbook is completed by the chapter dedicated to the history of English -speaking lexicography and modern trends related to the development of corps linguistics. The textbook is designed for students of philological faculties.
