Surgical life is a set of clinical symptoms described in the works of the Parisian School psychoanalysts group, which since the beginning of the 1950s became interested in the mental functioning of somatic patients. The author of the book, one of the representatives of this school, develops and deepens the study of “surgical conditions” and their metapsychology. He emphasizes the significance of the mental territories located “on the other side of the principle of pleasure”, under the sign of the instinct of death, the place from which the mechanisms that change the development of the individual and the life of its drives are originating.
