The real collection of the great Russian writer Maxim Gorky included the chosen stories and the autobiographical story “Childhood”, in which the eyes of the child show the bizarre world of Nizhny Novgorod of the late nineteenth century. It was from this Volga confusion, misfortunes and joys of ordinary people that the first works of the writer were born. These early stories of Gorky are fascinating and peculiar. Legends and fairy tales, the romantic world of freedom -loving gypsies and tramps, the stories of love and death continue to excite the imagination of readers today. As Merezhkovsky wrote: “Gorky deserved his glory: he discovered new, unknown countries, the new mainland of the spiritual world; he is the first and only, in all likelihood, unique in his field.”
