Isaac Babel is a wonderful Russian writer of the first half of the twentieth century, the literary father of the famous Beni scream from the Odessa Stories cycle, the author of the immortal Konarmia. Babel managed to create a short novel, a penetrating, an ironic and outwardly impassive storyteller, was able to create his own artistic world – terrible and attractive at the same time, in which there is a place of love and death, grief and joy, contempt for danger and the ability to enjoy life, in which high and low are closely intertwined.
