The work of Bella Akhatovna Akhmadulina is one of the brightest pages in the poetry of the twentieth century. “The fearlessness and courage of the poet, manifested in fairly grave years,” wrote Andrei Bitov, “earned her the glory of an uncompromising citizen, but did not distort and did not load the purity and height of her poetic voice.”
According to Joseph Brodsky, Akhmadulina became the heiress of the Lermontov-Pasternak line in Russian poetry: “… she wrote poetry, combining quite traditional quatrains with absolutely surreal dialectics of imagery, which allowed her to elevate her chills from a cold to the level of cosmic riots.”
This edition presents poems of different years, poems and memoirs of Bella Akhmadulina.
