To prepare the book, the texts of the outstanding Russian historian A. M. Zayonchkovsky were used The World War 1914 – 1918 in two volumes, as well as a description of the military events of the First World War of the famous historian A. A. Kersnovsky. The book uses memoirs of generals A. A. Brusilov and A. I. Denikin, which allows the reader to present the course of events on the fronts. The situation in the country and at the royal court is illuminated by the selection of texts from the diaries of Emperor Nicholas II, as well as from the memoirs of the head of the office of the Minister of the Court, General A. A. Mosolov and the ambassador of France in Russia by M. Paleologist. The book is illustrated by posters of the First World War, popular pictures for soldiers, paintings by famous artists and black and white documentary illustrations and photographs from periodicals of that time.
