Olga Andreeva-Karound, granddaughter of Leonid Andreeva, a writer and artist living in San Francisco, in 1967 in Moscow met Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who asked her to arrange the publication of his book “The First” in the West. Then her brother secretly took out the manuscript “Gulag Archipelago” to the West, and she and her husband took up the search for translator and publishers for the novel. In 1974, Alexander Solzhenitsyn said that Olga Carlisle’s negotiations with publishers had the goal of making the novel edition commercially profitable, i.e. It was guided primarily by commercial considerations, while the fate, the life and death of many people in the USSR depended on the wires with the publication. In addition, he expressed claims to the quality of the translation of his books into English. In 1978, Olga Andreeva-Carloil published a book in English, which proposes her version of their seven-year cooperation with Solzhenitsyn. Now – in a more complete form and with the disclosure of all names – this book is published in Russian.
