Queen of Evdokia, or crying in the Moscow kingdom: Vyacheslav Kozlyakov

The last Moscow queen, the rejected wife of Tsar Peter I, Elena, imprisoned first in the Suzdal Pokrovsky monastery, and then in the bastion of the Shlisselburg fortress, and, finally, the “sovereign of the grandmother”, considered an important and influential person during the short reign of her grandson, emperor Peter II, are all different sides of the biography of the prince Evdokia Fedorovna Lopukhina. But the fate of this unfortunate woman is interesting not only in itself. In it, as in a curved mirror, the whole Peter’s era was reflected – undoubtedly the majestic and grandiose in their accomplishments, but terrible for those who had a chance to be next to the “king of the reformer.” One of the main victims of the Petrine reign, Queen of Evdokia is a “uncomfortable” figure for Peter’s apologists. After all, the attitude towards it is largely determined by the understanding of the history of the entire Peter’s era. As soon as her name is recalled, questions inevitably arise about the price of Peter’s reforms, about what was happening with people plunged into the abyss …
