“Poor People” (1845) is the debut novel by F. M. Dostoevsky, who made the writer famous in literary circles before the publication. Among the very first readers was D.V. Grigorovich, who read the manuscript of N. A. Nekrasov: “On the last page, when the old girl says goodbye to Varenka, I could no longer control himself and began to sob; I furtively looked at Nekrasov: tears also flowed around his face.” Having finished reading, in the morning they came to Dostoevsky to report a strong impression made by the novel. Nekrasov handed the manuscript to Belinsky with the words: “The new Gogol appeared!” Many years later, Dostoevsky recalled Belinsky’s words: “The truth is open to you as an artist, you get as a gift, appreciate your gift and remain faithful and you will be a great writer! ..” In January 1846, the novel “Poor People” saw the Light in the Almanac of Nekrasov “Petersburg Collection”: so the readers first met the work of Dostoevsky.
