“On eight crafty spirits” and other ascetic creations: Rev. Neil Sinai (Ankir)

Rev. Neil Sinai (Ankirsky) – student of St. John Chrysostom and the great father of the Sinai desert. The book contains his moral-ascetic works: “About eight crafty spirits”, “that those who are in silence in deserts are mostly advanced in the cities”, “exhortation to the monks”, “Thoughts that take a person from the perishable and attach to imperishable”, “The heads of exhorting”, “On the teacher and students”. Rev. Neil Sinai, following Evagrie Popti, develops a well -known classification of eight basic sinful thoughts (passions): gluttony, fornication, abruptness, anger, sadness, despondency, vanity and pride. His subtle ascetic and psychological analysis of these passions helps a Christian successfully fight them and improve internally, which makes the book useful for both monks and the widest circle of Orthodox readers.
