The brightest representative of the Silver Age poetry, Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilyov, went to the front as a volunteer in 1914, despite the fact that back in 1907 he was released from military service. The book “Notes of the Cavalryman” is a documentary story about the first years of the 1st squadron of the Life Guards of the Ulan regiment held by him. Before us are the living pictures of war, represented by the eyes of not so much the great Acmeist poet as a cavalryman who courageously divided the hardships of military life along with ordinary soldiers.
