The ancient city of Nerekhta is located on the southwestern outskirts of the Kostroma region, in the middle of the path between Kostroma and Yaroslavl.
There was no information about the early periods of his history, but he probably arose long before the first mention on the pages of the annals.
For a long time it was believed that the name of the city in the language of the Finno-Ugric tribe of Meria means “a river in a low, marshy area.” Indeed, the Nerekhta river flowing through the city carries its waters in the lowland, but there are no swamps along its shores. More recently, candidate of philological sciences V.V. Tsoffka proposed another, as a more plausible, interpretation of the name of the city seems to be. In his opinion, the word “Nerekhta” consists of two Merian words: “Nerekh” – the name of the fish of the Goltz from the family of Karpovs and “HTA” – the place of spawning. Thus, the city of Nerekhta, standing on the banks of the river of the same name, got its name from the place of spawning of Golts, which is still everywhere in the Kostroma rivers.
