In the book, based on the first-introduced archival documents and other historical sources, the genuine tragic fate of Ivan Gavrilovich Pryzov (1827-1885), a forgotten Russian democrat, was revealed, due to a number of circumstances that became a participant in the notorious “Nechaev case”, which served as the basis of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky “demon”. The author reproduces the real picture of the activities of the conspirator-adventurer S.G. Nechaev and the “People’s Reprisal” created by him. Considering the phenomenon of “non -citizen” in a wide historical context, the author takes the reader to reflections on the role of the “subjective factor” in history, about the powerful power of myths, including literary. Much attention in the book is given to the activities of I.G. Rupzov as a historian, ethnographer and publicist.
