A young successful Petersburger finds a cache in the house of a recently deceased grandfather, and in it – a letter of 73 years ago, addressed to the unknown Lazaru Cherny. Out of curiosity, he unravels this story, “resurrects” for himself the life of a Cossack Lazarus, who was banditing in the Don steppes after the civil war. But at the same time, the secrets of his own family are more and more revealed to him, and unexpectedly the hero himself finds himself on the edge of death. Their own and other people’s sins, bitter love and blood feud, past and present, death and immortality are intertwined in a tight knot.
