Leonid Andreev (1871-1919) is rightfully considered perhaps the most mysterious figure in Russian literature at the beginning of the 20th century. “The Sphinx of the Russian Intelligentsia” was called by his contemporaries. The ancestor of domestic expressionism, he was one of the most popular writers of his time, which will subsequently receive the sonorous name of the Silver Age. The intellectual foundation of Leonid Andreev’s work became works by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. Prose is striking and stunning, it is symbolic and full of dark passions, the author seems to be foaming the reader and makes him doubt the ability of a person to resist the rough natural beginning and blind fate.
