The book of the St. Petersburg artist Vladimir Yakovlev (1817-1884) “Italy. Letters from Venice, Rome and Naples” (1855) occupies a special place among traditional “Italian trips”. She arose under the impression of a visit to the “homeland of arts” in May-October 1847. However, the author, following Gogol (the story “Rome”), focused his attention not so much on the monuments of antiquity or masterpieces of the masters of the Renaissance as on the everyday life of the Italian people.
This “very lively” perspective of the topic was appreciated by such an expert in Italy as P.P. Muratov, who returned the name of Yakovlev from oblivion. Now his travel sketches are returning to the reader. In addition to the book “Italy”, the collection includes four essays about Rome and an essay on Florence, published later.
Compilation and comments of Ksenia Kumpan, Albina final, Alessandro Romano.
